GOL says technical issue caused Porto Alegre–Salvador flight cancellation

GOL canceled one flight from Porto Alegre to Salvador on Saturday, the day before Brazil's presidential election runoff.

The airline said the aircraft had a technical problem, but did not explain what it was.

Passengers were seen protesting at Porto Alegre's Salgado Filho International Airport, with some calling for a solution so they could vote.

Posts on social media claimed that all flights from southern Brazil to the Northeast had been canceled, but that wider claim was not confirmed.

The claims raised concern that travelers might not reach their voting locations in time, while GOL said the cancellation was not political.

The affected passengers were rebooked on other GOL flights, with departures possible on Saturday or Sunday, according to the company.
