Dockworkers strike disrupts French and European ports

Dockworkers in France and other European countries went on strike on Friday, October 30, disrupting port work.

The French union called for no loading or unloading, and its leader said French ports could be 95% stopped.

The strike involved about 14,000 port workers across France, including 7,500 dockworkers.

The French union is protesting government budget measures that it says threaten social protections, and is also demanding higher wages and an increase in the minimum wage.

European unions oppose plans to make civilian transport routes easier to use for military shipments, saying ports should not become part of a chain of war.

The scale of disruption varied: at Le Havre, one cruise ship call was cancelled and eight were delayed, while the port operator described the overall effects as limited.

The French dockworkers’ union will join a nationwide strike on November 5, called by the CGT and other major unions.
