Architect Fritz Weinberger dies after fall in South Tyrol

Fritz Weinberger, a 72-year-old architect and former councillor in Schongau, died after a mountain accident in South Tyrol.

He fell 100 to 150 metres while descending the Kirchbachspitze on 15 October.

His hiking companion called for help, but rescuers could not save him.

Weinberger served on Schongau’s town council for the SPD from 1984 to 2002 and received the city’s honorary ring.

His architectural work shaped buildings in Schongau and nearby towns, including the city museum and school renovations.

His death is a major loss for Schongau, where colleagues remembered his commitment to the town and its historic centre.
