Breast cancer survivor completes New York marathon with scars visible

Lauren Spezia completed the New York City Marathon with her mastectomy scars visible on November 1.

The 33-year-old businesswoman and influencer from New Jersey finished the 42.195-kilometer race in 4 hours, 54 minutes and 4 seconds.

She said she ran to raise awareness of breast cancer and encourage women to take charge of their health.

Spezia was diagnosed in November 2024 and underwent chemotherapy, immunotherapy, a mastectomy and breast reconstruction.

She described her scars as medical marks that saved her life, and said she did not want shame to make her hide from the world.

She chose the race partly because its route passed a hospital where she received treatment.

Spezia hopes her run will support other cancer survivors and raise awareness among women; she had discussed her plan with her medical team, which supported the campaign.
