Police Refer Yeongdong County Governor Over Education Pact
In May, Yeongdong County Governor Jeong Yeong-cheol and Chungbuk Education Superintendent Yoon Geon-young signed an education policy pact about local education issues ahead of South Korea’s local elections.
A candidate for education superintendent later filed a complaint, alleging a breach of the law on local education autonomy.
Police referred Jeong to prosecutors without detention but did not refer Yoon.
The law bars party-affiliated candidates from interfering in education superintendent elections and candidates for superintendent from claiming a party supports them.
Police said the pact concerned the superintendent’s official duties and did not by itself show that Yoon claimed support from Jeong’s party.
They also said Yoon had not fully understood the pact when he signed it, while Jeong was seen as having led the agreement and distributed a related press release.
Police referred Yeongdong County Governor Jeong Yeong-cheol to prosecutors over an education policy pact made before local elections.
The police did not refer North Chungcheong Superintendent of Education Yun Geon-yeong, who signed the pact with Jeong.
The pact concerned education issues in the Yeongdong area and was signed in May.
Police said Jeong had led the pact and distributed a related press release.
They said the pact alone did not show that Yun had presented himself as supported by Jeong’s People Power Party.
