Recycled-plastic home for family in Carapicuíba built in 15 hours
In Carapicuíba, near São Paulo, Rejane Alves de Souza received a new home for her family after living in a precarious building.
The 45-year-old mother of nine lost her formal job after health problems, and the home was delivered in July 2023.
The 27-square-metre house was assembled in about 15 hours using plastic blocks that fit together.
The project used around two tonnes of recycled plastic, including material in the walls and roof.
It has a bedroom, bathroom and combined living room and kitchen, along with solar panels, rainwater collection and on-site sewage treatment.
The home addresses housing needs while reusing waste, and its compact design includes basic water and electricity connections.
The project was a pilot for a model intended to guide future social housing initiatives.
