Lyon tourism office set on fire during cost-of-living protest

A tourism office in central Lyon was looted and set on fire on 17 October during a protest against the rising cost of living.

The building is on Bellecour Square, where thousands of people gathered for a demonstration that had not been authorised by the local authorities.

Groups of masked youths clashed with police, who used tear gas, grenades and a water cannon as firefighters struggled to reach the blaze.

Looting and fires spread to shops in other parts of Lyon, and windows at the city hall were broken.

The Rhône prefecture reported 20 arrests by 7 p.m., but no official figure for injuries was given.

A planned interfaith peace march in Lyon was postponed at the prefecture’s request; no further next steps were reported.
