Spain's King Felipe VI has cataract surgery in Oviedo

Spain's King Felipe VI had surgery for a cataract in his left eye on Saturday night in Oviedo.

The routine procedure took about half an hour at the Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, where he will stay overnight.

He underwent the operation after completing public engagements in Asturias with Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía.

Earlier, the family visited Llanes for the presentation of the 2026 Exemplary Town award to the Santa Ana fishermen's guild.

A cataract can cloud the eye's lens and make vision harder, and surgery is a common treatment.

The Royal Household has not given further details about the procedure or said when Felipe will leave the clinic.

His next listed engagements are on Monday in Madrid and Tuesday in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and no changes to the schedule have been announced.
