Kanda says she and Nakagawa received different treatment as freelance announcers

Former NHK announcers Aika Kanda and Anna Nakagawa met after leaving the broadcaster when they appeared together on Fuji TV’s “Pokapoka.”

Kanda left NHK in 2012, while Nakagawa joined the broadcaster in 2016 and later became a freelance announcer.

Kanda compared Nakagawa’s agency support with her own, recalling that about five senior staff helped choose Nakagawa’s clothes, while Kanda’s team had about three people.

Kanda said the difference in support made it feel like they were treated very differently.

Nakagawa said their NHK careers reflected different expectations about individuality: Kanda’s generation was expected to master the basics first, while Nakagawa was allowed to show her personality from the start.

Nakagawa recalled having brighter hair and wearing nail polish early in her career.

Kanda said she might have told Nakagawa to fit in with NHK first, but stressed that the times had changed.
