India and US say trade deal talks are nearing a landing point
India and the United States are working toward a trade deal after more than a year of negotiations.
The talks began in early 2025 to address tariff disputes, reduce non-tariff barriers and improve market access.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar says the negotiations are nearing a landing point, although he did not disclose what remains to be settled.
India’s trade officials and the US Trade Representative are continuing discussions.
India wants better US tariffs for its goods than competing countries receive, while Washington is seeking to reindustrialise and reset access to its economy.
The deal matters because it could change the terms of trade between the two countries.
A final agreement is not yet imminent, according to the US trade representative earlier this month.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said trade talks with the United States were moving towards a “landing point.”
He said India and the U.S. were working through unresolved differences, though he did not say an agreement was imminent.
Jaishankar said the core fundamentals of the India-U.S. strategic partnership had not fundamentally changed.
He also defended India’s relationship with Russia, saying it was in India’s and the world’s interest for Russia to have multiple diplomatic options.

We’re very encouraged by it
I do believe it’s in our interest, and I believe in the world’s interest, that Russia has multiple choices, and that Russia has other relationships in Europe, in Asia
