India to introduce caller names on some mobile calls from November 1

India’s CNAP service is due to start on November 1, showing a caller’s name alongside their number on supported mobile calls.

The name will come from the identity details linked to the caller’s SIM, rather than a contact name saved on the recipient’s phone.

The service is initially intended for 4G and newer networks, so people using 2G or 3G may have to wait.

Callers will not need to apply separately or pay an extra fee, and international calls will be identified on screen.

The system could make unfamiliar calls easier to identify, but a displayed name does not prove that a caller is trustworthy.

Apps such as Truecaller may still offer other information, including spam reports, and users should not share passwords, one-time codes or bank details with unknown callers.

Telecom companies are expected to roll out the service, but it may not be available on every phone or network at the same time.
