School roof collapse in Pakistan kills at least 18

A private school roof collapsed in Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday.

At least 17 children and a teacher were killed, and more than three dozen people were injured.

Some children remained trapped under the rubble, and rescuers were clearing debris to reach them.

Peshawar is the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

A roof collapse at a tutoring center in Lahore killed four schoolchildren in July, and building collapses are common in Pakistan, where construction standards are often poorly enforced.

Substandard materials and ignored safety rules are cited as factors in unsafe buildings.

Some of the injured were in critical condition, and rescue work was continuing.
