Silmy Karim charged over alleged Rp168.92bn immigration extortion

Indonesian prosecutors have charged former deputy minister Silmy Karim with extortion in a case being heard in Jakarta.

They allege that Rp168.92 billion was extorted from immigration sponsors between 2021 and 2026.

Prosecutors say the scheme involved delaying or withholding immigration documents, including permits for foreign residents.

Six other defendants are accused of helping carry out the scheme, and prosecutors say they received varying amounts of money.

Karim also faces a separate charge of accepting Rp33.94 billion in cash and shares while serving as immigration director general.

The indictment has been read at Jakarta’s Corruption Court, and Karim faces penalties under Indonesia’s corruption law if convicted.
