Germany says army digital radio system is progressing after earlier problems

Germany is upgrading the army’s communications system so soldiers, vehicles and command posts can share information digitally.

The project, known as D-LBO, is intended to replace old radios and allow data such as maps, positions and orders to be exchanged in real time.

The work has faced software faults, slow data transfers and disappointing tests of signal range.

After tests in realistic conditions and a meeting with companies involved, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the system works.

The Bundeswehr says it has tested the system on Leopard, Puma and Marder armoured vehicles, and its inspector general praised its data transfer, range and voice quality.

Germany had promised NATO a combat-ready brigade by 2025, but the brigade’s equipment upgrade is now planned for completion by the end of 2027.

Industry representatives say the project remains on track for that deadline.
