Tension and disputed testimony mark Marseille triple-murder trial

Tension and disputed testimony mark Marseille triple-murder trial

Five people are on trial in Aix-en-Provence over the killing of three men near Marseille on 29 December 2020.

The victims included Brahim Chabane, the half-brother of Marseille activist and local official Amine Kessaci.

At the trial, Chabane’s widow gave a less detailed account than she had in interviews with police, saying she had repeated rumours after her husband’s death.

Her earlier statements described possible drug-trade disputes and a debt, but she now said Chabane may only have done small jobs.

Some witnesses appeared afraid to speak about the accused, and the courtroom saw a heated exchange between accused people and relatives of the victims.

The case matters to Chabane’s family, whose widow said she wanted justice for him and their daughter.

The trial was still under way during these hearings, and no verdict or next court date is given.
