Cuernavaca council member Gabriel Rivas Ríos is shot dead

Gabriel Rivas Ríos, a Cuernavaca council member from Morena, was shot dead on Wednesday in Acapantzingo, in the Mexican state of Morelos.

Armed men on a motorcycle fired at his blue car and fled.

Rivas Ríos had previously reported threats, and investigators are considering that history, but authorities have not confirmed a motive.

Police pursued the attackers to central Cuernavaca, but no arrests have been reported.

Morelos state prosecutors are investigating, while security forces search for those responsible.

Rivas Ríos had spent more than five decades in social activism and previously served in the Morelos state congress.

The investigation is continuing, with the state governor calling for coordination to clarify the killing and bring those responsible to justice.
