Italy’s defence minister sees no Ukraine peace deal before next summer

Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said he does not expect a solution to the war in Ukraine before next summer.

He said Russia may use winter to pressure Ukraine, including by striking civilian and energy infrastructure.

Crosetto said Italy has supplied Ukraine with tools to defend itself, and argued that stopping aid would not end the war.

He said a new package might help intercept 50 to 70 missiles or drones, potentially saving civilians, though he gave no firm estimate of the effect.

In his view, ending support would suggest Italy accepts that a stronger country can conquer another.

Crosetto said the next aid package has no set timeline, adding that it would be sent when possible.

He also said a peace mission in the Strait of Hormuz was not possible in the near term.

I do not see the possibility of a solution in Ukraine before next summer because Russia will certainly use winter as a means of pressure.

If tomorrow Italy decides to break the NATO-Europe front and stop helping Ukraine, it would mean coming under negative scrutiny in Europe; the war would not stop.
