Man arrested after attacking elderly couple and entering their home in Nierstein

A 63-year-old man attacked an elderly couple on their property in Nierstein, near Mainz, on Monday evening.

The couple are 90 and 87, and police said the man had no fixed address.

He went into the couple’s home and refused to leave after the attack.

The woman broke her hand and nose; the sources do not give details of the man’s injuries.

Police surrounded the house and arrested him, entering with keys provided by the couple’s family and using a police dog because they did not know if he was armed.

He was taken to a psychiatric facility for an assessment of whether a mental illness might explain his behavior and whether he could pose a further risk.

Police said he had been noticed several times in Nierstein in recent weeks, but was not believed to know the couple personally.
