South Australian restaurants receive Australia's first Michelin stars

Michelin awarded stars to 11 South Australian restaurants at a ceremony in Adelaide on Wednesday.

This was the first time Michelin rated restaurants in Australia.

Magill Estate Restaurant, at Penfolds winery in the Adelaide foothills, won two stars; its executive chef is Scott Huggins.

Ten other restaurants each received one star, including venues in Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley.

Michelin also recognised other venues, bringing the total to 77 venues recognised in South Australia, according to Premier Peter Malinauskas.

The awards followed a commercial agreement with the South Australian government, which says restaurant selections were independent; the price paid remains confidential.

The awards are intended to help attract visitors, though whether they will boost tourism remains to be seen.
