Swiss authorities report early cases of synthetic cannabis vape liquids
Police in Zurich and St. Gallen have found a few cases involving vape liquids known as “Baller-Liquids.”
The liquids contain synthetic cannabinoids, substances made to mimic cannabis and sold in colourful packaging.
They are not ordinary vape flavours: in Switzerland, synthetic cannabinoids are covered by the narcotics law.
Their ingredients and strength may be unclear, and reported effects include fainting, seizures, a racing heart and psychosis; severe cases can be fatal.
Experts are concerned about risks to young people, who may mistake the products for harmless flavourings and already use e-cigarettes.
It is not yet clear whether the cases signal a wider trend in Switzerland, and Zurich schools say they have no known cases so far.
Swiss addiction experts advise parents and teachers to talk with young people and say anyone who suspects a product contains synthetic cannabinoids should not use it.
