Ukraine pairs a long-range drone with a balloon to extend its reach
A Ukrainian design bureau says it has paired the Mara strike drone with the Balun balloon to extend the aircraft’s reach.
The balloon is designed to carry the drone above 10km before releasing it.
The bureau says Mara can then fly independently for about 60km, bringing the system’s total reported reach to at least 1,060km.
The approach uses balloon technology that dates back about 240 years to help a modern drone travel farther.
The bureau says the system costs up to $6,000 and could force Russia to use costlier defences, but those claims have not been independently checked.
It also says the drone has been combat-tested and struck locations in occupied Crimea and Berdiansk, though this remains unverified.
The bureau planned to begin commercial production by mid-October, but no official production or delivery figures were given.
Ukraine is pairing the Mara long-range drone with the Balun aerostat to extend the system’s reported reach to at least 1,060km.
The aerostat reportedly carries the drone above 10km altitude before releasing it.
Mara can then fly independently for about 60km, according to the report.
The Ukrainian Mariupol design bureau estimates the combined system costs up to $6,000.
The bureau says the drone has undergone combat testing, but independent verification of its performance is unavailable.
- Who
- Ukrainian engineers and the Mariupol design bureau developed the system.
- What
- The Balun aerostat carries a Mara drone to altitude and releases it to continue its flight.
- When
- The article was published on October 16, 2026; the bureau planned to begin commercial production by the middle of October.
- Where
- The bureau reported strikes in occupied Crimea and Berdiansk. The system was developed in Ukraine.
- Why
- Balloon transport is intended to extend the system’s reach by reducing the distance Mara must fly independently.
This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
The bureau reported that Mara had undergone combat testing and struck locations in occupied Crimea and Berdiansk.
The bureau planned to begin manufacturing Mara drones commercially.
