Mamdani Meets Puerto Rican Band Chuwi to Discuss Gentrification

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met Puerto Rican band Chuwi in San Juan to discuss issues affecting the island and its people.

Chuwi has gained international attention through a collaboration with Bad Bunny and as an opening act on his tour.

The band’s album *Libertad* addresses government corruption and the effects of colonial policies.

Mamdani said he wants to connect Puerto Rico with nearly 600,000 Puerto Ricans in New York City, who share concerns about displacement and gentrification.

Their conversation took place during the annual Somos Conference, where New York lawmakers meet with Latino advocates in Puerto Rico.

Mamdani also met local coalitions and activist groups working against displacement and gentrification.

He said New York City can be a partner for working people, but no further steps were announced.

I look forward to listening to Puerto Ricans to hear about what the struggles are that they’re facing and how New York City can be a partner in fighting for working people wherever they may call home.

What I’ve heard from Puerto Rican New Yorkers is a concern about displacement and gentrification, not only in the neighborhoods that they’ve helped to build in New York City, but also right here in Puerto Rico.
