Russia's Peter the Great cruiser may not be repaired
A Russian commission says the Peter the Great cruiser should not be repaired or modernized because of wear.
The finding is preliminary, and Russia has not made a final decision on whether to retire the ship.
Peter the Great is the only active nuclear-powered cruiser in Russia's Orlan class and serves as the Northern Fleet's flagship.
Four Orlan-class cruisers were built between 1977 and 1996; two have already been retired because of wear.
The remaining ship, Admiral Nakhimov, returned to sea in 2026 after 28 years out of service.
Sevmash, the shipyard responsible for modernizing the cruisers, can take only one at a time, and Nakhimov's work was delayed and cost more than 200 billion roubles.
If Peter the Great is retired, Admiral Nakhimov will become Russia's most powerful strike ship; the final decision on Peter the Great is still pending.
