Red Sox trade infielder Tsung-Che Cheng to Tigers for cash

Boston is trading infielder Tsung-Che Cheng to Detroit for cash.

The 25-year-old Taiwanese player spent one season with the Red Sox after Boston claimed him off waivers in February.

He started 13 games at shortstop during a month on Boston’s major-league roster, batting .256 in 44 plate appearances.

Cheng spent most of the season in Triple-A Worcester, where he hit .241 with eight home runs.

Evaluators have praised his plate discipline and defense around the infield, and see him as a possible utility player.

He will occupy a spot on Detroit’s 40-man roster, which is currently above the 40-player limit depending on pending roster decisions.

Cheng will compete for a Tigers bench job if he remains on the roster through the offseason.

Both teams must reduce their rosters to 40 by Monday evening.
