Brazil approves Wegovy tablets for obesity, but sales date is unknown

Brazil's health regulator approved Wegovy tablets for adult obesity treatment this week.

The medicine is made by Danish company Novo Nordisk and contains semaglutide, which helps regulate appetite and food intake.

It is the first oral drug in Brazil's weight-loss injection class approved for this use.

Sales cannot begin until Brazil's drug-price regulator sets a maximum price, and no price or launch date has been announced.

Novo Nordisk says the tablets should reach pharmacies in the coming quarters.

Unlike the weekly injection, the tablet is taken every day while fasting; the regulator says patients may switch between forms when clinically indicated.

It is intended for adults with obesity, or with overweight and at least one related health condition, alongside dietary changes and physical activity.
