SMBC Consumer Finance says data of up to 320,118 people was exposed

SMBC Consumer Finance found unauthorized access to a loan-guarantee system used for services such as card loans.

The company works with banks and other financial institutions in Japan to guarantee loans for their customers.

Information for up to 320,118 people was sent outside the system, including names, addresses, licence numbers, income and loan-guarantee amounts.

Images of driving licences and other identity documents were not included.

The company detected the access on November 2 and blocked it that day, then confirmed the leak while checking for other unauthorized access.

It has paused the system while it checks its safety and investigates the cause and the extent of the exposure with experts and relevant parties.
