Democratic socialists win mayoral races in Los Angeles and Washington

Nithya Raman defeated incumbent Karen Bass in Los Angeles’s mayoral race on Thursday.

Janeese Lewis George also won Washington’s mayoral race, joining Zohran Mamdani, who already leads New York City.

Together, their victories put Democratic socialists in charge of three major US cities.

They came amid wider Democratic gains in the midterm elections, including Senate wins in Texas and Kansas, states Donald Trump carried by double digits in 2024.

Analyst Peter Rough said the results reflected a backlash against the party in power more than strong public support for Democrats.

He warned that the gains could strengthen the Democratic Party’s socialist and progressive wing.

Democrats can shape policy ahead of the 2028 presidential election, but they lack the two-thirds Senate majority needed to override a Trump veto; the Democratic Senate will also confirm federal judges nominated by the president.
