Mexico's lower house to question INE watchdog over Taddei case
Mexico's Chamber of Deputies plans to question INE internal watchdog chief Víctor Hugo Carvente about alleged irregularities at the National Electoral Institute under former president Guadalupe Taddei.
Taddei has resigned, but lawmakers say her departure should not end investigations into possible misconduct.
The alleged wrongdoing has not been established, and PRI leader Alejandro Moreno has made further claims about contracts and political influence that require investigation.
Lawmakers say four agencies have roles in the inquiry: the financial intelligence unit, the federal audit office, the INE's internal watchdog and the attorney general's office.
The hearing is expected in the coming days, while Morena and its allies say they want an impartial process to choose the INE's next president.
They plan to discuss the selection rules next week, after the formal resignation process is complete, and say a draw among candidates is an option if lawmakers cannot reach broad agreement.
Alejandro Moreno called for investigations into alleged irregularities at Mexico’s National Electoral Institute to continue after Guadalupe Taddei left its presidency.
Moreno alleged that Taddei, her close team and Morena built a structure involving corruption and influence-peddling at the institute.
He said the allegations involved contracts, supplier relationships and appointments, and claimed the network extended to more than 20 states.
Morena leader Ricardo Monreal said Taddei’s departure would not exempt her from possible technical, financial or criminal responsibility.
The Chamber of Deputies plans to summon the institute’s internal control chief, Víctor Hugo Carvente, to explain his handling of the allegations.
