Soriana's third-quarter profit fell 19% as sales weakened

Mexican retailer Soriana's third-quarter net profit fell 19% to 473 million pesos compared with the same period a year earlier.

The supermarket chain ended September with 801 stores, 18 fewer than a year earlier, and its retail floor space was down 2.3%.

The net reduction does not necessarily mean 18 stores closed, because Soriana's figures also reflect openings, renovations and changes in store format.

Sales at stores open for more than a year fell 3.6%, showing that weaker sales were not only due to having a smaller network.

Lower sales also weighed on operating results, while costs took a larger share of revenue despite lower operating spending during the quarter.

For the first nine months, net profit rose 18.3%, helped by lower financing costs, even as revenue and comparable-store sales declined.

Soriana invested in two new stores, renovations and equipment, but it gave no breakdown of spending by category.
