Vucic concedes Serbia election to student-led opposition movement

Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat in Serbia’s parliamentary election on Sunday, saying the student-backed Students’ List had won.

The vote pitted Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party against a broad opposition movement that drew support from people across the country.

The movement grew out of protests over corruption allegations after a train station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad in 2024, killing 16 people.

Vucic’s party has denied corruption, while students accused the government of weakening democracy and demanded changes.

Vucic projected 135 to 140 seats for the Students’ List, compared with about 105 for his party in the 250-seat Parliament; final results were not yet available.

The concession marked a major political shift after Vucic had held power as president or prime minister since 2014.

The movement campaigned on proposals including removing officials who broke rules and reducing political control over the public broadcaster.
