Bear kills well-known hunter in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region

A bear killed hunter Vitaly Yelfimov on the evening of October 28 in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region.

Yelfimov, 48, was from Petropavlovka village and was described as one of the region’s leading bear hunters.

The attack happened near the upper reaches of the Katun River, about 160 kilometres from Cheremshanka village.

His 29-year-old companion called for help by radio the next day, and investigators went to the scene.

Nine people have now died in bear attacks in the region, including a worker killed less than a week earlier.

Authorities are investigating officials over alleged negligence as the region removes bears from the wild and pays hunters for each brown bear killed.

Regional lawmakers have also proposed changes to bear-hunting rules, but the sources do not say whether those proposals will be adopted.
