Serbian public broadcasters face scrutiny after election and apology
Serbia’s public broadcaster RTV apologized on air for years of one-sided and uncritical reporting.
Anchor Goran Eror said the broadcaster had failed to ask important questions and had not fulfilled its role.
The apology followed a parliamentary election in which the opposition Student List movement won, according to the reports.
The movement grew out of protests that began in 2024, while Aleksandar Vučić’s party lost the election.
An RTV editor and an RTS director resigned in the aftermath: RTV’s acting editor-in-chief stepped down after the apology, while RTS director Manja Grčić resigned three days after the vote.
RTV and RTS are separate broadcasters, and the reports describe different resignations.
The resignations put media independence in focus after years in which opposition and critical voices were underrepresented on RTS.
The reports do not say what changes either broadcaster will make next.

What people are saying
For many years, the public broadcaster failed to fulfill its role. Things went unsaid, a blind eye was turned, information was one-sided, reporting was uncritical, and the right questions were not asked — or no questions were asked at all. And for that, we owe our viewers an apology
But we believe it is important to carry on that fight
I am aware, however, that part of the public perceives even my temporary stay in office as an obstacle to change
