Kawanishi mayor Kenjiro Koshida wins third term

Kenjiro Koshida won a third term as mayor of Kawanishi, a city in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in an election held on October 18.

The 49-year-old independent incumbent defeated Yasuharu Shiba, a 59-year-old former city assembly member running as an independent.

Turnout was 51.44%, up from 49.28% in the previous mayoral election.

Koshida said voters had recognized his policies on children's education and pledged to carry out the plans in his manifesto.

His priorities include a 100 million yen fund for children's education, expanded support for community welfare and improved parks and public spaces.

Shiba criticized Koshida's approach to local issues, including moving junior high school sports clubs into community programs and cuts to public transport, and proposed an independent body to review city government.

Koshida now faces the task of delivering his manifesto during his third term.
