Mexico lawmakers seek extra funds for IMSS worker benefits in 2027
Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies’ Social Security Commission requested 1 billion pesos extra for IMSS benefits in the 2027 budget.
The money would support benefits and related social assistance infrastructure for staff at the Mexican Social Security Institute, known as IMSS.
The proposed budget already assigns IMSS more than 1.8 trillion pesos, a real increase of 9.8% from this year.
The commission also sought more than 400 million pesos extra for ISSSTE, including services for people with disabilities and childcare centres.
ISSSTE is Mexico’s social security and services institute for government workers.
Separately, most unionized IMSS workers rejected a proposed 2.9% increase in base pay and 3.9% in benefits, so salary negotiations are due to resume.
The commission approved its opinion on the federal spending plan by 23 votes to three; the story does not say what happens next in the budget process.
