Dutch speedway racer Romano Hummel dies aged 27

Dutch racer Romano Hummel died aged 27 on Wednesday in Hoogkerk, where he lived.

He competed in grass-track and long-track motorcycle racing, disciplines in which riders race on oval tracks.

Hummel won three European grass-track titles, the latest in August, and also became a long-track world champion in 2021.

He began racing as a child and won world titles in the 125cc and 250cc youth classes before moving to the 500cc class in 2015.

He won about 300 international races during a career that lasted 23 years.

After a serious crash in Germany in 2024, he announced he would stop racing, later returned, and retired for good last month to spend more time with his children and friends.

I have, of course, had a long career, 23 years. There comes a day when you have to stop.
