Three women die after flood sweeps pickup into Nicaragua river
On October 9, a sudden flood swept a pickup into the Nahualapa River in Nicaragua's Chinandega department.
The group was returning to its hotel after spending days at a surf camp and attending a dance class.
Three women died, including a 20-year-old Swiss woman, French traveller Emma Marie and a Nicaraguan woman.
The French survivor Marine Despouys said the group was close to its destination when the driver tried to cross a flooded stretch of road.
Water quickly rose to the windows, and the pickup was carried about 300 metres; Despouys said she managed to escape.
The vehicle was still underwater when villagers found it, with the three women inside and showing no signs of life.
Despouys tried to revive Emma, and she has shared her account of the tragedy on Instagram.
