Large-cap stocks show resilience as smaller shares lose momentum
Bajaj Broking says large-cap stocks in India are emerging as the more resilient market segment as mid- and small-cap shares lose momentum.
From September 11 to November 2, the Nifty 50 fell 0.5%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 dropped 7% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 6.6%.
Mid- and small-cap shares had led much of the market rally earlier in 2026, supported by domestic institutional investment and strong investor demand for riskier stocks.
Recent market moves suggest investors are favouring quality and more predictable earnings as uncertainty grows around US elections, company results, geopolitical tensions and global growth.
Large companies’ stronger balance sheets, liquidity and relatively reasonable valuations may help them withstand volatility, though they may not deliver the biggest gains when investors are taking more risks.
The note expects large caps to offer better risk-adjusted returns over six to 18 months, while a recovery in foreign investment could particularly benefit Nifty 50 companies, private-sector banks and major financial firms.
Large-cap stocks have proved more resilient than mid- and small-cap shares amid rising market uncertainty, according to a Bajaj Broking note.
Between September 11 and November 2, 2026, the Nifty 50 fell 0.5 per cent, while the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 7 per cent and 6.6 per cent.
The note says investors are increasingly favouring quality, liquidity, earnings visibility and downside protection.
Bajaj Broking believes large-cap stocks may offer better risk-adjusted returns over the next six to 18 months.
Uncertainties include US mid-term elections, corporate earnings, geopolitical tensions and the global economic outlook.

What people are saying
The investment case for large caps, therefore, is increasingly centred on their ability to withstand market volatility rather than deliver spectacular near-term returns.
While mid- and small-cap stocks have driven market performance through much of the current cycle, the recent divergence suggests that investors are placing a greater premium on valuation discipline, earnings visibility and downside protection.
The question is no longer whether large-caps can outperform in every market phase, but whether the balance of risk and reward is shifting in their favour.
