Beach Fictions follows one woman through two versions of the same day

South Korean filmmaker Lim Hayeon’s debut, Beach Fictions, tells two versions of one day in a young woman’s life.

Tae-ju, played by Hansol Park, leaves Incheon for a quiet coastal town after friends gossip about her and her casual boyfriend does not want a deeper relationship.

There, she meets Manhyuk, a street magician, and feels drawn to him.

The film retells the day with changed circumstances, giving Tae-ju and Manhyuk a different chain of encounters.

The shifting story leaves open how much Tae-ju’s life is shaped by other people’s ideas and how much by her own choices.

Its central question is who controls Tae-ju’s story, as the film blurs whether she inspires a novelist’s character or is being shaped by the writer.

The film premiered in the Busan Film Festival’s main competition, and is expected to appeal to other international festival programmers.

Its 145-minute running time may make wider arthouse distribution or specialist streaming harder.
