Koen Schuiling appeals conviction in cassation

Former Groningen mayor Koen Schuiling is challenging his conviction in cassation, a further legal step after an appeal court ruling.

The court fined him €250 for public indecency over an incident in his car on the A7 motorway in March 2024.

A truck driver said he saw Schuiling masturbating, while Schuiling has denied it and said he had stomach pain and was rubbing his abdomen.

The appeal court accepted the truck driver’s account as reliable, citing its detail and consistency, and said Schuiling had not always given the same explanation.

Schuiling says the conviction is unjust and that its consequences for him are immense, despite the relatively small fine.

He will now take the case to cassation; no further details about the next steps are given.
