Government weighs reducing stakes in four public sector banks to 75%

The Indian government is considering cutting its stakes in four state-owned banks to 75%.

The banks are Central Bank of India, Uco Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank and Indian Overseas Bank.

The plan would raise public ownership to 25%, the minimum required by the stock-market regulator.

The government aims to increase public shareholding within a year, potentially by selling shares, depending on market conditions.

Separately, officials are planning another round of bank consolidation, which could identify two more banks for privatisation.

The government’s longer-term aim is to have three or four large state-owned banks, and privatisation would require changes to legislation.

The plans are still under consideration, while the government is also pursuing the sale of its stake in IDBI Bank.
