QatarEnergy in talks for LNG from planned Texas export train

QatarEnergy is negotiating to buy up to 2 million metric tons of LNG a year from US company NextDecade.

The proposed supply would come from Train 6 at the Rio Grande LNG facility near Brownsville, Texas.

The talks are advanced, but Train 6 is still in the permitting process and has no final investment decision.

LNG is natural gas cooled into liquid form so it can be shipped by sea.

NextDecade says the first five trains at the facility are already fully sold and are expected to produce about 30 million metric tons a year when operating.

QatarEnergy has been seeking long-term US supply deals as part of a strategy to protect against possible future disruptions to exports through the Strait of Hormuz.

NextDecade is targeting an investment decision in 2027, and the project would need approval before construction can proceed.
