Protest in Punjab after anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota is shot dead

Anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota was shot dead in Mansa, Punjab, on October 13.

His last rites had still not been performed about two weeks later.

Residents have turned a road into a permanent protest site, with crowds gathering behind barricades.

They are demanding the resignation of Punjab’s Chief Minister and the state’s Director General of Police.

Protesters accuse the government of failing to tackle drugs, a problem Punjab has faced for more than two decades.

The protest calls for people to continue Jhota’s fight against drugs rather than simply mourn his death.

Traffic police have diverted vehicles, while residents say through their continued presence that they intend to stay for the long haul.
