Italy’s AVS presents proposals for a shared centre-left programme

Italy’s Green and Left Alliance (AVS) has unveiled proposals for a programme it wants to share with other centre-left parties.

The proposals followed an online consultation that drew 110,000 votes, mostly from people who were not party members and from people aged 18 to 34.

The most popular idea was a climate law within the first 100 days of government, with a goal of making Italy fully reliant on renewable energy by 2040.

Other proposals include a tax on fortunes above €5.4 million, legalising cannabis, allowing euthanasia and opposing rearmament.

AVS also wants a law against fascist propaganda, including the Roman salute, and a discounted utility bill for people in difficulty.

The party is urging its allies to start writing a shared programme, while a proposed protest against the government and the cost of living has received support from centre-left leader Elly Schlein.
