Sinaloa officials hope gang leader’s arrest will reduce killings in Culiacán

Authorities arrested Orlando Castañeda Torres, known as “El Coco Ranas,” in Culiacán, the capital of Mexico’s Sinaloa state.

Officials describe him as the suspected leader of Los Ranas, an armed group operating in the city and linked to a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The operation detained four men after a report of armed people at a home, where authorities seized weapons, ammunition, suspected drugs and other equipment.

Sinaloa’s security chief hopes the arrests reduce killings and other serious crimes, but he gave no estimate or timeline for any change.

The state recorded 992 homicide victims from January to September 2026, but those figures do not show how many killings happened in Culiacán or were linked to Los Ranas; seven homicides were reported in Sinaloa the day after the arrest.

The federal prosecutor’s office will investigate and determine the legal status of the detainees, while the effect of the arrest on crime remains unknown.
