India food regulator questions claims and compliance at Nestlé and HUL

India’s food safety regulator issued notices to Nestlé India and Hindustan Unilever over two products.

Hindustan Unilever’s Horlicks Mother’s Plus Kesar was flagged for claims linking it to a healthy birth weight.

The regulator said those claims could mislead consumers by suggesting the product itself provides health benefits.

Nestlé India’s Resource Renal powder, intended for people with chronic kidney disease, was flagged for lacking required prior approval.

The regulator also said its label did not show the required vegetarian or non-vegetarian symbol.

Both companies must explain the alleged violations, and the notices do not determine the final outcome.

If their responses are unsatisfactory, further action under food safety laws could follow.
