Romanian doorstop identified as 3.5kg piece of ancient amber

A woman in Colți, Romania, used a 3.5kg stone as a doorstop for decades without knowing what it was.

She had found it in a streambed near the village, in Buzău County.

After she died in 1991, a relative inherited her home and suspected the stone might be valuable.

Experts in Kraków, Poland, confirmed it was amber formed 38 million to 70 million years ago.

The dark reddish material, known as rumanite, is a rare local type of amber, and such a large piece is unusual.

Romania classified the amber as a protected national treasure, and it has been on display at Buzău County Museum since 2022.

Its size and age make it scientifically important, but the museum has not yet published a full analysis.
