Riedel begins first drilling at Cosmo in more than 30 years
Riedel Resources has begun drilling at the Cosmo gold project in Western Australia’s Laverton Gold District.
It is the first drilling there in more than 30 years, and the company is testing targets on the project’s western side.
The 7,000-metre-plus program plans around 110 holes across three prospects, using soil gold signals and geophysical features to choose locations.
Earlier drilling in 1995 reached only about five metres, while sand and clay cover at Cosmo may be about 50 metres thick or more.
The new work aims to reach fresh rock and build a clearer picture of gold prospects beneath the cover across a largely unexplored greenstone belt.
Drilling is expected to take about three weeks, and Riedel says the results will guide further exploration.
Riedel Resources has begun Cosmo’s first drilling campaign in more than 30 years.
The reconnaissance program covers more than 7,000 metres on the western side of the 580-square-kilometre Cosmo gold project.
Drilling is targeting the Ironbar, Toecutter and Cheedo prospects in Western Australia’s Laverton Gold District.
The program will test gold-in-soil anomalies and interpreted geological structures beneath cover.
Riedel says the results will help guide further exploration across more than 50 kilometres of greenstone belt.
- Who
- Riedel Resources is conducting the drilling.
- What
- It has started a reconnaissance drilling campaign of more than 7,000 metres at Cosmo.
- When
- The campaign was underway when the article was published on 4 November 2026.
- Where
- The Cosmo gold project, in Western Australia’s Laverton Gold District.
- Why
- To test for gold mineralisation and improve understanding of the covered geology, helping guide further exploration.
This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
The last drilling at Cosmo consisted of shallow rotary air blast holes that reached about 5 metres.
Riedel acquired the Cosmo and nearby Mt Venn interests.
Stockhead reported that Riedel’s more than 7,000-metre reconnaissance drilling program was underway.
- Program length
- More than 7,000 metres
- Project area
- 580 square kilometres
- Target prospects
- Ironbar, Toecutter and Cheedo
- Planned holes
- Around 110
- Drill spacing
- Roughly 40 metres
What people are saying
This 7,000m-plus reconnaissance program will test targets near interpreted structures and lithological contacts.
As well as testing for in-situ gold mineralisation, it will provide valuable geological information to guide further exploration across more than 50km of largely unexplored greenstone belt in the prolific Laverton Gold District, much of which remains under cover.
