Yeosu to require plans to increase local firms’ share of construction work

The city of Yeosu in South Korea is changing its rules to direct more construction work to local companies.

The revised ordinance is due to take effect in January 2027, with a subcontracting oversight system planned for construction sites.

Yeosu says large projects, including industrial complexes, housing and tourist developments, have often sent both main contracts and subcontracting work to firms from outside the area.

The city will ask public bodies and private project developers to submit plans for working with local subcontractors.

It will encourage local firms to make up at least 49% of joint contracts and 70% of subcontracting, while also promoting local participation and direct work on private developments.

Yeosu plans to publish results online, and says more local work could support jobs, purchases of local materials and equipment rentals.

I hope this leads to the broader economic effects of revitalizing neighborhood businesses and preventing population outflow, as workers on site have more money in their pockets.
