René Benko approved for electronically monitored house arrest
An Innsbruck court approved René Benko’s move to house arrest with an electronic ankle monitor on Wednesday.
Benko founded Signa, an Austrian property and retail group that collapsed at the end of 2023.
The group’s creditors have filed claims of about 40 billion euros.
Benko was recently sentenced to 30 months in prison for harming creditors, but he remained in pre-trial detention over other investigations.
His lawyer said house arrest would help him prepare for further proceedings and that an apartment had been rented in Innsbruck.
Benko is due in court on November 4 and 5 over allegations of serious fraud and harming creditors.
The court’s decision means he can leave detention for monitored house arrest while those cases continue.
An Innsbruck court approved René Benko’s request to move from pretrial detention to electronically monitored house arrest.
Benko’s lawyer, Norbert Wess, said he expected the transfer to happen that week.
Wess said the move would help Benko prepare for upcoming trials and referred to his right to a fair trial.
A roughly 60-square-metre apartment had been rented in Innsbruck for the house arrest, according to Wess.
Benko remains under investigation in connection with the collapse of the Signa group and faces further court proceedings.
