Cyclone expected to reach Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts on October 28

A storm over the Bay of Bengal is strengthening and could become a very severe cyclone, India’s weather department says.

It is expected to move towards the coasts of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha.

The storm is forecast to make landfall on the morning of October 28, though its exact path and strength may change.

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected in parts of both states, with southern Odisha districts among those likely to be hit hardest.

Odisha has activated disaster response teams and its chief minister has directed officials to prepare evacuations and emergency measures.

Schools in five Odisha districts are due to close on October 28 and 29, and fishermen have been warned to stay at sea.

Weather officials are expected to provide further updates as the storm develops.
